WPS, PQR, WPQ & Welder Qualification – Meaning & Benefits
The three terms in one line each. A WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) is the written instruction telling a welder how to make a production weld. A PQR (Procedure Qualification Record) is the test evidence proving that WPS actually produces a sound weld. A WPQ (Welder Performance Qualification) is the certificate proving a particular welder can follow that WPS correctly. WPS and PQR qualify the procedure; WPQ qualifies the person.
What we do: Apeiwtes AWS Technology Center in Vasai (E), Mumbai prepares WPS documents, develops and witnesses PQR qualification, and conducts WPQ welder qualification testing to ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1 and ISO 9606 or ISO 15614, for fabricators, shipyards and EPC contractors across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Maharashtra.

Our WPS, PQR and WPQ services
- WPS preparation. We draft the Welding Procedure Specification for your joint, listing the essential variables: process, base and filler materials, joint design, positions, preheat and post-weld heat treatment, and the welding parameters.
- PQR development and witnessing. We weld the test coupon to the proposed WPS, arrange mechanical and non-destructive testing, and compile the Procedure Qualification Record that proves the procedure is sound.
- WPQ welder qualification. We test your welders against the qualified WPS and issue or arrange the Welder Performance Qualification certificate, including class society endorsement where the project requires it.
- Third-party witnessing. Where your client or a classification society requires an independent witness to the procedure or welder qualification, we attend and certify.
- Onsite execution. For fabrication units and shipyards, all of the above can be done at your premises rather than ours.
When you need each one
If you are bidding for or executing a coded job, the client will usually ask for all three. The WPS has to exist before production welding starts. The PQR has to back it. Each welder on the job needs a current WPQ covering the process, position, material and thickness range they will actually weld. Missing any one of these is the commonest reason a fabrication job fails a client audit or a third-party inspection.
WPS – Welding Procedure Specification
✅ Meaning:
A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a formal, written document that provides direction to the welder for making production welds in accordance with applicable code requirements. It outlines the essential variables such as:
- Welding process (e.g., SMAW, GTAW, GMAW)
- Base materials
- Filler metals
- Joint design
- Welding positions
- Preheat and post-weld heat treatments
- Welding parameters (current, voltage, speed)
💼 Benefits:
- Ensures uniform welding practices across projects
- Guarantees code compliance (ASME, AWS, ISO, etc.)
- Reduces the risk of weld failure
- Enhances production quality and safety
- Helps in audits and third-party inspections
2️⃣ PQR – Procedure Qualification Record
✅ Meaning:
A Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) is a record of test results obtained by welding a test coupon using a proposed WPS. It includes:
- Actual welding variables used
- Test results (e.g., tensile test, bend test, impact test, etc.)
- Visual and NDT evaluations
The PQR proves that the WPS can produce a sound weld meeting code requirements.
💼 Benefits:
- Provides proof of weld integrity
- Essential for client approval and third-party verification
- Improves project documentation and traceability
- Builds client trust and credibility
3️⃣ WPQ – Welder Performance Qualification
✅ Meaning:
A Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) is a test to assess the skill of a welder to make a quality weld under specific conditions. It ensures the welder can follow the WPS correctly. The test is usually certified after:
- Visual inspection
- Destructive and/or Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
WPQ is often issued as a Welder Qualification Certificate.
💼 Benefits:
- Certifies that the welder is qualified and competent
- Improves hiring quality and manpower control
- Mandatory for many regulated industries (oil & gas, marine, pressure vessels, etc.)
- Helps reduce rework and rejections
4️⃣ Welder Qualification – General Concept
✅ Meaning:
Welder Qualification refers to the process of evaluating and certifying a welder’s ability to produce welds that meet specific standards. It’s done in accordance with codes like:
- ASME Section IX
- AWS D1.1
- ISO 9606
- DNV, ABS, LR, IRCLASS for marine and offshore
💼 Profits & Advantages:
- Ensures project success by reducing defects and improving durability
- Facilitates compliance with international codes
- Adds value to the welder’s profile and resume
- Enables companies to bid for high-value and export-oriented projects
- Reduces liability and enhances safety in the workplace
Conclusion:
Investing in WPS, PQR, WPQ, and Welder Qualification is essential for:
- Maintaining high-quality standards
- Ensuring compliance and safety
- Winning client confidence
- Enhancing productivity
- Reducing costs related to failures and repairs
These certifications are not just paperwork—they are strategic tools for business growth, quality assurance, and industry reputation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of WPQ in welding?
WPQ stands for Welder Performance Qualification. It is the certificate recording that a named welder has demonstrated the ability to produce an acceptable weld following a specific Welding Procedure Specification, within a defined range of process, position, material and thickness.
What is the full form of PQR and WPS?
PQR is Procedure Qualification Record and WPS is Welding Procedure Specification. The WPS is the instruction; the PQR is the recorded test evidence that the instruction works.
What is the difference between WPS, PQR and WPQ?
The WPS tells the welder how to weld. The PQR proves that procedure produces a sound weld, using actual test results. The WPQ proves a specific welder can follow it. WPS and PQR qualify the procedure; WPQ qualifies the person.
What does WPQR mean?
WPQR, or Welding Procedure Qualification Record, is the European term broadly equivalent to the PQR used under ASME. You will see WPQR in ISO 15614 documentation and PQR in ASME Section IX documentation.
Who issues a WPS certificate?
A WPS is not issued by an outside body; it is prepared by the manufacturer or fabricator and supported by a PQR. Where a client, classification society or statutory inspector requires it, the procedure and the welder qualification are witnessed and endorsed by a third party. We prepare the documents and arrange that witnessing.
How long is a WPQ valid?
Normally two years under most codes, and only while continuity is maintained, meaning the employer records every six months that the welder has been welding with that process. A break in welding, or questioned weld quality, requires re-qualification.
Can you develop a WPS and PQR for our fabrication unit?
Yes. That is one of our core services for fabricators, shipyards and EPC contractors in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and across Maharashtra. Send us the joint details, material and applicable code, and we will quote the scope.
